The U.S. Army has awarded a Virginia company a $45.8 million contract for maintenance dredging work to be done in Mobile’s harbor.
Norfolk Dredging Co., Chesapeake, Virginia, won the contract from among five bids submitted.
Work will be based out of Irvington, Alabama, with an estimated completion date of Jan. 16, 2027. Fiscal 2026 and 2024 operations and maintenance, Corps of Engineers, civil funds will be used for the project.
Norfolk Dredging is a family owned company in operation since 1899.
It has continued to work on dredging projects from New England to the Gulf Coast and the Caribbean, including work in lakes, bays, sounds and rivers, and in the North Atlantic Ocean.
The company also has performed beach re-nourishment services.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District, is the contracting agency for the project in Mobile Harbor, which is Alabama’s only deep-water port.
The port also is one of the nation’s busiest, often ranked in the Top 10 for handling cargo tonnage.
Several shipping companies, including shipbuilders and service companies such as Austal USA, Alabama Shipyard, etc., are based around the harbor.
