FORT NOVOSEL, Alabama — An Army AH-64 Apache helicopter crashed Wednesday during routine flight training, killing the instructor and injuring the student.
Fort Novosel, previously known as Fort Rucker, is located in south Alabama and serves as home to Army aviation, including as the Army’s primary training facility for helicopter flight.
Daniel Munger, 46, who was a contractor and retired from the Army, was killed in the accident, the Associated Press reported, quoting Dale County Coroner John Cawley.
The student was not identified and was being treated for minor injuries.
“Our primary concern is the welfare and health of the student pilot and care and concern for the family of the deceased,” Maj. Gen. Clair A. Gill, U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence and Fort Novosel commanding general, said in a press statement.
The crash remains under investigation.
The U.S Army Aviation Center of Excellence headquarters staff at Fort Novosel analyzes, assesses, provides staff management oversight and recommends for decision all activities affecting Army Aviation policy, command guidance and the development, implementation and execution of processes to support the command in meeting its mission.
