MONTGOMERY — The Alabama National Guard has called to duty more than 400 service members in preparation to assist local responders during the next several days for severe freezing weather, snow and ice across the southern half of Alabama.

The Guard stood up seven of its multi-functional Mobility Support Teams on Sunday to operate out of seven regional facilities from Birmingham to Mobile. This activation follows closely on a similar activation of 350 personnel supporting winter weather response in northern Alabama 10 days prior.

“One of the unique things about our Guardsmen is being part of the communities they serve,” said Maj. Gen. David Pritchett, Alabama National Guard Adjutant General. “Stepping up to tackle uncommon challenges is a huge responsibility, but we’re proud to stand with our state partners to see our neighbors through the storm.”

The Mobility Support Teams are equipped for route reconnaissance, right of way clearance, transportation of critical resources, search and rescue, and more. The Alabama National Guard also is capable of rapidly expanding, reducing, or altering its response to meet evolving needs.

The Guard will operate under the direction of the Alabama Emergency Management Agency and in close partnership with the Alabama Department of Transportation, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, and local services for the duration of the winter weather response.
