MONTGOMERY — The Alabama National Guard has activated approximately 350 service members to assist local first responders and state support agencies in anticipation of severe winter weather later this week, officials announced Wednesday.
The Guard has stood up six of its multi-functional Mobility Support Teams operating out of seven regional facilities covering the entire northern portion of the state as far south as Birmingham.
“We always hope our Guardsmen are not needed, but we’re always prepared for when we are,” said Maj. Gen. David Pritchett, Alabama National Guard Adjutant General. “We train for this often, and many of our officers and NCOs have done similar missions in the past. We’re ready and we’re here to support our communities and our partners in need.”
The Mobility Support Teams are equipped for route reconnaissance, right of way clearance, transportation of critical resources, search and rescue, and more. The Guard is also capable of rapidly expanding, reducing, or altering its response to meet evolving needs, its press statement said.
The Alabama National Guard units responding will operate under the direction of the Alabama Emergency Management Agency for the duration of the winter weather response.
