MOBILE – The U.S. Navy has awarded an $18 million contract to Alabama Shipyard LLC for a routine dry-dock overhaul of the Military Sealift Command’s replenishment oiler USNS Laramie.

The Laramie is a fleet replenishment oiler assigned to the Atlantic Fleet. It has a crew of more than 75 civil service mariners and provides fuel, cargo and stores to U.S. and allied ships at sea.

The contract calls for a 160-day shipyard availability for work in Mobile scheduled to begin March 25 and be completed by Sept. 1.

“This contract includes a base period and five unexercised options, which if exercised would increase the cumulative value of this contract to $18,280,568,” the Department of Defense reported.

The contract, awarded Jan. 31, 2024, was a small business set-aside solicited via the sam.gov website and three offers were received, from which Alabama Shipyard was chosen, the DOD said.

Military Sealift Command, Norfolk, Virginia, is the contracting agency.

Mobile shipyard stays busy

It will not be the first time the Laramie has visited Mobile. Alabama Shipyard previously was awarded a similar contract at almost $9 million for service to the ship in 2022.

Detyens Shipyards Inc., in North Charleston, South Carolina, serviced the vessel in 2023, having won the contract from among six bids, in the amount of $10 million.

Meanwhile, Alabama Shipyard was selected for similar drydock work in 2023 on another Navy replenishment oiler, the USNS John Lenthall, in an almost $11 million contract.

It also won a $20 million bid in 2023 to service the USNS Comfort, one of the Navy’s two primary hospital ships along with its sister ship USNS Mercy.
