Another endorsement of continued work at Lockheed Martin’s missile assembly plant in Troy, Alabama, came Thursday when the Department of Defense announced an $18 million contract modification for work on a THAAD weapons systems deal already topping $10.4 billion.

The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system can intercept a variety of enemy missile fires, from short-range to long-range threats, and can be used in land or naval applications.

The contract work on system components is being performed in Sunnyvale, California, and in Troy, with an expected completion date of August 18, 2028.

It’s the second major multi-million-dollar addition to a billion-dollar contract for missile work that includes production in Troy, coming on the heels of a DOD announcement in late July adding large-bulk purchases of the Joint Air-To-Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM) and Long-Range, Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM).

That deal, modified to a $9.5 billion contract, involved foreign military sales to Poland, Netherlands, Japan and Finland, with work performed at Lockheed Martin’s facilities in Troy and Orlando, Florida, through January 2033

Lockheed Martin Corp., Missiles and Fire Control, Dallas, Texas, is the company sector that earned the contracts. It is one of four business areas for Lockheed Martin, the others being Aeronautics, Rotary and Mission Systems, and Space.

Missiles and Fire Control develops, manufactures and supports advanced combat, missile, rocket, manned and unmanned systems for military customers that include the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, NASA and dozens of foreign allies.

The Missile Defense Agency, Huntsville, Alabama, is the contracting agency.

Lockheed Martin continues to have a growing presence in Alabama, including major operations in Huntsville and Courtland. More on its Alabama connections can be found here.
