Meet Pvt. Ciara Fells and Pvt. Asalyn Fells (L-R in photo), identical twins and newly enlisted soldiers for the Alabama National Guard.
The sisters, both 17 years old and high school seniors from Birmingham, joined the Guard their junior year of high school. The National Guard allows new members to enlist if they are at least 17 years of age and a junior or above in high school.
“We joined because we wanted to experience something new,” Ciara said. “We wanted to do something different from everything our family and friends do.”
The sisters completed basic training together during their summer vacation and will go to Advanced Individual Training the summer after they graduate high school.
“We’re so used to being together that we were in the same platoon in basic,” Asalyn said. “It made things easier having someone with you to go through the hard times. We were never lonely and relied on each other.”
These two lifelong battle buddies signed up as Motor Transport Operators and plan to be in the same unit together when they’re finished with training.
They’ve both said they’re excited for the opportunities the Guard has provided for them and look forward to their future together serving their state and country.
